The showrunner was asked about that in an interview, they said it's like a security blanket to him, his link back to the way things were before the whole world went insane (from his perspective, of course).

My GF and I stuck with it the entire season and really enjoyed it. Has some interesting twists and turns, and the guy who plays Ichabod is great.

It's good. They added a new guy who is like a treasure hunter who helps them out with lore and magic weapons.
