Thread: Eurogamer's Games of the Generation

Alas, I'd be left with pure action, shooting, or beat 'em up games, all of which are preferable to just about everything.

  2. Outside of nostalgia there's really only a handful of vintage games at most that truly stand up as better than the good retro-styled games. Volgarr, Super Meat Boy, Gunpoint, Stealth Bastard, Noitu Love 2, Hotline Miami, Pac-Man CE, and so on are easily up there with if not better than actual old greats. Sure, there's the occasional true standout from yesteryear like Metal Storm and Osman, but there's nowhere near "hundreds" of titles that good.

  3. I generally find that I enjoy true vintage games over new retro ones even if I have never played either.

That being said, I don't hate on retro games at all, Castlevania HD might be my favorite ever.

  4. Well there's certainly a lot of garbage retro games that try to coast on being retro, but there's been a good amount of fantastic in there as well.

On what planet does this resemble a SNES game?

Part of the problem with the industry is this attitude of technophiles. Bullshit like this game doesn't look like a 2013 game so it has to be bad, or it's 2013 every game should have multiplayer. It's bullshit and it's why time, money and effort were wasted on adding mutliplayer to the Arkham games instead of going into the single player. Games should be taken at face value, is it a good game yes or no, not well it doesn't check the boxes of some arbitrary list of what a 20xx game should have. Ohh this game is more 2013 than this game they can't cost the same!!!!

    It's asinine.

  7. The Arkham multiplayer sounded like a cool take on the Spies vs. Mercs setup, which was itself a great multiplayer mode added onto a single-player series. Same goes for the multiplayer in Ass Creed. The issue in AO was that the mechanics sucked, not that the mode existed.

Adding multiplayer to series that have previously been single-player isn't a bad thing by itself, it's just when it's lazy and/or they decided to just half-heartedly shove a deathmatch with CTF into X game. A lot of the multiplayer modes anymore have actually been bigger jumps in gameplay than what got added to the single-player.

  8. I remember when I thought there would be co-op in mass effect. And there there wasn't and I was sad.

  9. Speaking of co-op in RPGs, in Path of Exile there's one quest where a bandit leader will ask you to help him kill the other bandit leaders, and you can choose to help one of them or kill all of them. If you're in a party when doing that quest each person gets to make their own choice, and if your choice conflicts with anyone else's then you get flagged for PVP and have to fight and kill your teammates. I rather liked that, although it's unfortunately the only quest in the game like that.

  10. Uncharted's MP is pretty good and ND has even said that it forced them to take another pass at the mechanics which improved the SP game. So, as always, details matter.
