    I dunno. Nintendo's been REALLY hit or miss in the past 5 years for me. I really didn't dig most of their N64 stuff, except for Paper Mario, Pokemon Puzzle League, Star Fox and a few others. Then there's all the retarded stuff like Mario Worker and Mario and Wario, and Luigi's Mansion. Then there's all the stuff that just wasn't half as good as it should have been, like Wario 4, and F-Zero X and yes, Mario 64. They're just as hit or miss as Treasure, I think, but alot more prolific. Apart from their 2 PS2 games which were the victims of short development cycles and low budgets (something Nintendo has the luxury of avoiding) and the admittedly abyssmal Light Crusader, I thoroughly enjoyed all of their games. That's subjective, I know and you're welcome to disagree, but Nintendo's just as arguable. They were ALOT stronger in the SNES days. I really do feel like they've lost their stride a bit.

    I hate to say it, but Treasure's the same way. They'll kiss ass even if its not that good. Look at GameGo's Stretch Panic coverage. Some people just have too devoted of a fanbase to be worth istening to anyone. I'll play it for myself, but if its really more M64 I'm going to be disappointed.
    A testimonial is meant to sway people's opinions, and that wasn't one of them. I personally don't care who likes or doesn't like the game, since someone else liking a game is of no concern to me. I'm simply stating a fact. Sunshine is a classic, whether or not you choose to accept that is really not important, time will tell.

    Ditto. The series changes it's style around enough but still keeps the magic Mario touch to it. It sounds silly, especially when it can't really be explained much better than that but that's it... that magic Nintendo, Mario, Miyamoto touch. I would enjoy a highres 2d Mario platformer on GCN like anyone else, "and Hillbillies want to be called Suns of the Soil, but it ain't gonna happen."

    Last night I got my 40th shine sprite, so I am 1/3 of the way there. I am aiming to get 80 by the end of this weekend and all 120 by the end of next week.

  7. Some people just can't seem to grasp the idea that many games are going 3D. Mario 64 was amazing. 3D took nothing away from it. Adventuring took nothing away from it (I mean, those hidden coins in the sky in Mario 3! What the heck?!? They shouldn't be there! Who wants to have adventure?) Mario Sunshine throws Mario 64 out the window and adds tons of cool features and gameplay. If you're going to whine about a series going 3D or "changing" (oddly enough, Miyamoto's ideas for Mario have remained the same the entire series, "To create a garden for the player to play in" [paraphrased], and I think Miyamoto might know a little more about what he wants from his series than we do) and keep yourself from enjoying it, fine, but don't go trying to make fans of great games agree with you and your malarkey.

    Ah well.

    And the reason people went nuts about TJ&E going platformer is because the game wasn't as great as a platformer when compared to the original. Even the developers said the second wasn't as good.

    It was alot closer in terms of quality than Mario 64. I'd put them about equal, but honestly I don't think most people even were willing to play more than a level or 2 of the second game. It's not the series going 3D that bothers me. It's the series essentially dying and being replaced with bland, repetitive and forgettable children's gaming. I'm sorry, but M64 is just utterly outclassed by the likes of Rayman 2. It was NOT a continuation of the series and it was NOT as good. It was very slow and very dull. The old mario games were very arcadey and very linear, and also a good deal more challenging, and Mario 64 captured NONE of what appealed to me about the series.

    Someone mentioned the new Shinobi. Hosestly, although the series is changing drasticly, at least it's still very much an intense arcade-action style game. Mario 64 isn't even in the same genre.

  9. I have to agree, while I thought Mario 64 was great, it was outclassed by Rayman 2. Up untill now Rayman 2 was easily the best 3d platformer out there. Super Mario Sunshine now bypasses that and sets a new standard.

  10. bbobb: Aside from the fact that I find the 3D platformer genre so oft defined by Mario 64 to be a fundamentally weak genre, will we all still care about Mario Sunshine when Tork or Blinx or Rayman 3 come out?
