Thread: The Official Super Mario Sunshine Thread

  1. The Red Coins on the Pirate ship is easy, just go to the top and drop/hover to the ones in the air. All the others are just doing some simple hand over hand work on the fences.

You want hard? Try the Pipe out on the Island with the strandad guy in Delfino Plaza. That sucks, not only does it take a while to get Yoshi out there via boats, but the level it self is a bitch!

And the cages on the back of the amusement park is easy as well, just bring the camera all the way back and you are fine.

Oh, and 109 Shines and counting.

You don\'t need to butt stomp, if you aim at the floor the water will spin the floor panels as well.

Well, I'm back. For those that were wondering, the past week was spent (since I got the game Tues. afternoon) playing Sunshine in my very sparse spare time. I'd get home from EB at 11:00 pm or so, and start playing until 3:00 am or so, then get up at 8:00 am to go to my first job and do it all over again. Point is, I finally got down to playing it hardcore Friday and Saturday, and it is so damn good! The cinema scenes freaked me out, but I quickly recovered and began to slide Mario through the muck in the airstrip, leaving behind trails and getting it all over his clothes... now THAT is fun as hell.

The controls are different from Mario 64... they took out a hell of a lot of moves, which threw me for a loop (until I started using the FLUDD, which more than makes up for any omissions... I still miss my long jump, tho'). Mario also holds his "screeching turns" longer (make him run in a direction, then point the stick in the opposite direction), making it easier to do a somersault. Wall jumps are a hell of a lot easier, since he grabs onto the walls Mega Man X style. It's so cool to see him sliding down cliff walls in Noki Bay. Oh, and has anyone tried the water somersault (click R and press A)? It sends out a big fan of water that cleans up messes real quick.

As far as difficulty goes, I guess it was hard since I saw a Game Over screen, which hasn't happened in a while with a Mario game. The hardest shine to get (hands down) is the lilypad level in the main hub. It takes SO DAMN LONG to get there, and then you die.

OK, point is, after some hardcore playing Saturday (and I mean waking up at eleven and playing until three in the morning, had no breakfast or lunch, didn't even leave my room, didn't even SHOWER for the love of Pete-type playing here) I have emerged victorious with 120 shines. It is indeed a bittersweet victory, though, since I thoroughly enjoyed my short few days with Mario, and was very sad that it was all over.

Now, if you'll excuse me again, I will delete my save file and start from scratch.

Damn, looks like the race to get the most shines in the least amount of time is over.

I certainly wish I had that much time to play the game, but yeah I agree with mostly all your points. It's a great game and I don't think any platformer will touch it for a while.

OK, here's some helpful Sunshine tips from ol' Uncle Mzo:

    - Press Z... when you roll the cursor over a location, it's information (# of shines, secret shines, high coin score, and number of blue coins found (very important)) will be displayed. Handy!

    - Since Mario's control is camera dependent, it is sometimes easier to keep him moving in a forward line and using the C-stick to make him turn.

    - Spray everything with water... it usually pays off.

    - Try to eat everything with Yoshi. It's funny and will usually pay off.

-Don't even try to ration your water, there's plenty everywhere. If you run out, you're a tool.

OK, this is lame. I'm stopping. If anyone has any problems or questions regarding Sunshine, just post here and I'll pop in and answer them, or insult you. Or both.

  5. I'm up to about 46 Shrines after purchasing the game yesterday, I was unable to shut it off last night, it kept calling me (ask Bahn) and I played until 10:30 this morning, slept for about five hours, woke back up and played some more. It's friggin' addictive as hell, I am this comic incarnate right now.

There are tons of niggling flaws and minor problems, but nothing's ticked me off yet (although a couple jumps have started to get to me). I have a feeling the Shine of jumping behind the Ferris Wheel is going to be the first to piss me off, it's annoying as hell.

  6. I found the "behind the ferris wheel" to be pretty easy. Just spin the camera around when needed and keep going. Not hard.

Does that screen (when you hit z) show blue coins? I didn't see any indication for it...

  7. If you drag the cursor over each locale in the first "Z screen," the number of blue coins collected for each is shown.

  8. The only problem I had was with getting stuck(collision problems) on a part of a board and not being able to do anything and this was in my first stage! But so far it's a kickass game, really addicting fun.

I'm taking it slow a bit since my job hasn't let me get a day off entirely to play it all day but it's all good. By the way is it possible to get the green Yoshi?

Yoshi-dog's colors don't matter; they're dependent on the last fruit you ate. Whenever he "dies" or runs out of juice, he reverts to his green Yoshi-dog form.

Oh, and Mech, I found something that PISSED ME THE HELL OFF. In the Hub level, I did a spin jump with Yoshi up to a roof, only to fall through it and into the ground, to my doom. This has happened twice (once w/Yoshi-dog, one without, in two separate locations). This should NOT happen in a Nintendo game, I'm sorry (as bad as Peach's castle roof was in Mario 64).

And Rumpy! That was one of my tips, damnit! Read my posts! The # of blue coins will appear on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. Can't miss it.

Here's another tip when you're looking for blue coins: be suspicious of everything that is blue. EVERYTHING!

PS - and if anyone wonders why I call Yoshi Yoshi-dog, read Eastman and Laird's first run of TMNT stories until you get to Splinter's origin. I don't know if the line where Shredder (then Oroko Saki) says Yoshi-dog (to, of course, Hamato Yoshi) is in the movie, but it always made me laugh.

  10. Yeah I know it's only his fruit colors but I thought it would be cool and nice to play him as his good old green version. Ah well.
