Thread: Frozen

  1. This felt almost exactly like a sister movie to Tangled. I'd rank it in the same place, where ever you guys feel like ranking that.

The only thing that bugged me about the movie was when queen whatever (I seriously have no idea what anyone's name was) did her transformation thing and busted out the dress with the huge leg slit and her adorably-ruffled-yet-still-perfectly-arranged braid. For some reason it struck me as a particularly pop music video moment, like they had accidentally wandered in a Britney Spears video for a minute.

I also got a little too excited at the Maleficent trailer. I might go see that.

Tangled is my wife's favorite Disney movie, by a lot. She watches it almost once a week. She fucking hated Frozen and all of the songs.

I didn't hate the movie. I rather liked it and it did some stuff REALLY well, but it also did some things and made some choices that I laughed out loud at, not because they were supposed to be funny but because they were so fucking stupid. I'm very conflicted about the whole experience.

  4. Scandinavian nations have a really big troll thing going on historically and it's really prevalent in their pop culture. That said, I didn't really like their design or function in the story much either.

Given all the types of people this movie needed to appeal to, I thought they did a fantastic job. Some of the songs weren't great, but the snow sister coming in to her own was moving little number (even if cliche). I have hard time believing folks are being even appropriately objective comparing this to similar movies they watched as a kid. I mean, it's still a princess movie, and we're adults now.

I might criticize the intensity of some of the imagery, if anything. Some of the threat/peril scenes were a little much for the little kids in the group. Some odd notions of consequence as well. I mean, I get it, but I figure the sisters/kingdom would be a little saltier about all the attempted murder and treason.

By sister movie I meant the layout and everything is so super similar, it almost felt to me like they were both originally from the same design document. The somewhat tomboyish princess who loses her parents and must team up on an adventure with a rugged guy looking to get paid who has a large and expressive yet non-talking riding animal sidekick. I realize many of these movies are formulaic in similar ways, these two just struck me as particularly so.

Keep in mind that when I watched Tangled I was equally distracted, so I haven't seen either of these movies with complete attention. For whatever reason when other people decide I need to watch this movie right now it's when I feel like doing something else.
