They're probably very interested in the mobile market but can't figure out how to tether somebody's purchases to a single phone.
Not to mention how much of it would a company like Nintendo stand to get

I'm not denying that's a lot of money, but it's going to just a few hands. Not that the console space is that much better in that regard, it's still more spread out than .1 %.
Plus there is no guarantee that it's going to keep climbing at the rate it is. Hell it might go faster or it might slow down big time. I think suggesting a platform holder drop their successful handheld market to chase the iOS/Android one is a bit premature.
Sony's two entries into handhelds have both been big losses for the company. Yet I don't see anyone suggesting they drop it and develop their games for iOS/Android. Meanwhile the one company that has seen continued success in the handheld market is being told to do so. It's silly and short sighted. Let's see where the industry goes. I'm personally not convinced that iOS/Android is the future of all things gaming.
This also isn't taking into account the market that has developed on those platforms. It's not a place to sell 30 - 40 dollar games. That market has blatantly rejected higher priced fair for 99 cent applications.

People don't suggest Sony go iOS Android, they just suggest they should stick to the non-portable space period.
For me, it isn't about iOS/Android. It's about not needing a dedicated gaming device. And that's where we are headed. Now, if you're 5 years old, maybe it's still there.
It's hard to say the the future is a shrinking market. Does anyone think the trend will actually reverse, or is it just 'there will always be a sizable market for dedicated devices, even if it isn't as large as before'?
Well, if King.com or whomever can make money on the platform why can't Nintendo? Is King.com smarter?
First of all, Nobody is saying Nintendo should drop 3DS. Right now it is making money. But look at how the market is moving. As is, the 3DS is quite a bit less successful than the DS. There's no evidence a 4DS or whatever will reverse this trend.
Second of all, do you think the smartphone market will "slow down big time"? I see no reason to believe it would, while at the same time I see all the reasons to believe it will continue to accelerate.
Evolve or die. Markets change and the companies that don't respond go away.
Smart companies prepare for the future, dumb companies stay stuck in their ways until they become irrelevant. Right now Nintendo is acting pretty dumb.
I am pulling for Sega in this new hardware generation.
I am also thinking this thread could get merged into the "Defining Feature of the Next Gen" thread and no one would ever notice.
