Thread: Official Thread of Michael Pachter Predictions

That's fair, and that's also why I also originally mentioned streaming as an option. Maybe that clears that hurdle, if it doesn't tie up the device 100%.

  2. Or you could just have another device that plays games so you have full use of your phone at all times. There's no real benefit to using your phone as a home console. Smartphones and tablets are convenient as portables, but the lack of physical buttons limits control too much to make them viable replacements for consoles. Besides, many people enjoy using consoles. I think that's the main reason PC gaming isn't dominant.

You realize that you can use a PS3 controller with most smartphones and tablets, right? And that's just one of multiple solutions that will continue to grow. You sound like the people who don't realize you can get a small form factor PC, connect it to your TV, and use a controller.

edit: All of the concessions will be solely on the console and dedicated portable side in five years, assuming they aren't already.

  4. More likely that we're moving into an environment where you control all these devices with whatever the hell you want to. There's not a lot of light between a PC and a Phone now, no reason that everything you have won't just merge onto a unified OS.

"Hardware plasticity" is the only way this is headed.

Agreed. It'll be interesting to see if Sony and Nintendo partner up with Valve/Linux, Google, or Microsoft fast enough to avoid just being completely marginalized.

edit: And here's hoping Microsoft gets marginalized anyway.

  6. I think, if anything, we're moving to a period of greater hardware specialization. The vast majority of Joe Sixpacks will move from a PC to a tablet. Hardcore nerds will continue to have 8 foot high towers. The middle will have something in between, like a X51 or a videogame console.

All these things will have more or less the same capabilities, it's just about hardware power and how much fiddling people want to do. For example everything can do Netflix.

I think there is a market for consoles. Not so much for portable systems, though.

  7. Totally disagree (except for the Netflix thing). One software, many 'heads'. If somebody wants to play Halo 9 on a tablet with the same save as their PC, I'm betting they'll be able to. If you have a tablet and a TV and you want to use those together, also happening.

I don't think there will be a market for software that can't work across everything very shortly here, you'll just be picking what screen you want to use.

That's the Microsoft approach. I'm not saying that as a value judgement, but that's their strategy.

  9. Why Microsoft specifically? PS3/PSP remote play? Same deal.

  10. That's streaming though. MS is putting the same version of Windows on everything from a ~$200 tablet to a gazillion dollar tower. If Halo 9 comes out for "windows" you can play it on both devices natively.
