He wasn't paying attention. Or didn't give any real thought to what he was seeing. The fact an entire race was treated like white trash should have been telling. And lol at the idea that they'd taken him aside and told him the truth about whitey.
His defenders seem to be doing a really good job of totally shifting the discussion of the actual comments he got shitcanned for, judging by the comments in here and all over FB.
That interview also had this gem, a blanket generalization that implies blacks were contented with their situation in a segregated, pre-civil rights reform society, and topping it off with a sweeping conflation of blacks as part-and-parcel with entitlement and welfare programs, which have apparently made them miserable and ungodly.
The repeated gay comments certainly helped ease the decision to give him the boot, but this is the one that launched his ass out the door. It's indefensible.Phil On Growing Up in Pre-Civil-Rights-Era Louisiana
“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

The most disturbing thing about the White family is their propensity for tap dancing.
The main reason being that it's not the government telling him not to talk. His employer decided they didn't want to be associated with that kind of viewpoint so they suspended (not fired) the guy. No one is saying he can't be a racist and a homophobe. He can speak like that all day if he wants, and probably does.
If the Duck Dynasty clan decided to can the show because of this, it's the best possible outcome.
Also- holy crap YAWA!

Yoshi? Nah. You're thinking of "black people".
I used to know a lot of families on Welfare, too. There were indeed some deadbeat parents, but I still think the welfare was a good thing, on account of the children who didn't have a call in the situation.
