played like my freshmen year of college. Stopped when I encountered my first pro players. It went from fun to boring meh time. Dudes would build decks before the cards were released, then buy boxes to build the decks. 10 minute turns. No fun.
I didn't have a Lotus but the kid who taught me to play in 9th grade study hall had 2.
I played up until a little after Ice Age came out. Sold all my cards to that kid right before he moved away. No one else in my school played. And I couldn't get my "jock" friends to even consider playing.

I enjoy the yearly IOS games so I tried to look up the story... and it's the worst sort of fantasy fanfiction gibberish. Ideas stolen from dozens of different sources and just thrown into a stew pot until the colors turn brown. No movie worth a shit is going to come of it. With the metric ton of fantasy books out there, I don't know why they went with this.

As long as you aren't populating, all is well. Selesnya gets a dick punch, even if I have a sideboard with Ratchet Bombs. Extra dick punches for every Voice of Resurgence. Cheap bitches.
I was one of those people who made you stop playing. Hehe. Now, though, I build decks around funny shit - like an army of squirrels or something. Or I have a white deck that's all one mana to cast. Etc.
Anyway, it's interesting to read what AaronChance said. I haven't read any of the books or delved too much into these new story lines. They went with this because it makes sense from a marketing standpoint, though. You already have existing product you can expand on.
This sounds like me. There was a group of like 4 or 5 of us and we'd have matches on rainy days. One time in like 95 (Using the Tales from the Crypt movie soundtrack to place the date) there was a heated argument over what move had priority, and I think a games workshop was called for clarification, only to be called nerds and hung up on.
I stopped just after Ice Age, and I think I had a handfull of Ball Lightning, or Fork Lightnings, whichever was more expensive.
Hehe. Ball Lightning. Also, that's the one that is more expensive.
They totally overhauled the turn structure so I bet your argument would not have happened now. "Interrupt" is no longer a thing and everything cast gets thrown onto "the stack" which is a literal stack of spells, cast in order and resolved from top to bottom.
… They should just make the movie about nerds playing and arguing over this shit. As long as Cheatyface shows up I'll be happy.
The power curve has been massively adjusted. The game is slower now. Sorceries, instants, and enchantments are less powerful, while creatures are more powerful. Spells like Counterspell, Lightning Bolt, and Swords to Plowshares no longer exist in the newer core sets. A basic counter spell now costs 2 u and 1 colorless, IIRC. The closest thing to a Lightning Bolt is Spark, which costs 1 r and deals 2 damage instead of 3. Ball Lightning has been phased out, and artifact mana sources are severely toned down (no more Sol Ring). Dual lands are much weaker, but more common.
They also did away with mana burn, interestingly enough. That takes away one of my classic decks, which involved playing Manabarbs, Power Surge, and basically choking people to death.

I'm not a devious man by nature... but when you're unarmed, your tactics might gonna be downright Archimedean.
