Thread: How Would You Rank Last Gen's Shmup's?

That Salamander collection is the single biggest reason the Vita single account bullshit sucks.

We don't carry that: Jamestown (really wanted to try this, haven't upgraded my PC since 2007ish so I've just avoided playing anything on it), Ikaruga (have always thought it looked "too hard" and so I never gave it a shot, Will has been trying to convince me to get it for the co-op), any of the newer DDPs, Ketsui, tons of others I'm sure.
Even a PC from 2007 should run it fine.

  3. I updated my list with the ones I saw other people list that slipped my mind. Can't believe I had forgotten about Recca and Galaga Legions having just played those in the last month.

By what stretch is Recca last gen?

  5. Oh, yeah, it was on the 3DS. I was thinking DS digital for some reason.

So are twin sticks shooters their own seperate genre?

They seems fairly close to shmups in play style.

I'm not sure how I would rank last gen's shooters. I played a lot of them (at least briefly) but my interest in the genre was generally pretty low. I enjoyed After Burner Climax, Jetpac Refuelled, Deathsmiles, Raiden Fighters Aces, and Child of Eden quite a bit, though. Sin and Punishment 2 was my big disappointment but I will give it another soon.

You almost have to include them in the shooter genre, because you get some crossovers like Forgotten Worlds that really blur the line.

    <3 Forgotten Worlds

I tend to stick with original genre definitions. "Shoot 'em up" originally covered all kinds of shooters whether it was Space Invaders, Defender, or Robotron. Zzap! magazine later shortened the term to "shmup" and still used it for all kinds of shooters. The narrowing of the term is a later creation, and always seemed unnecessary to me.
