Thread: Games that Make You Want to Type "</genre>"

  1. The original Deus Ex has some ideas and implementation which are excellent even now, but it's also clumsy and stilted in a lot of ways especially when it comes to combat. I find it better as a memory than something I want to actually play.

My point was that there is no more specific category for Castlevania.

  3. I prefer Orta over Zwei, probably only because it is so much prettier. Saturn 3D really hurts my eyes.

  4. Melee action platformer. Is it being compared directly to Contra? Ninja Gaiden Black? God of War? Gauntlet? Metal Storm? Everything can be labeled into more specific terms.

I meant genres people actually use. Of course we can coin genres to better fit everything.

Every enthusiast gamer knows what action platformer means even if they don't use the term themselves. It's less confusing than simply saying action, a term that really covers multiple genres. "Melee" doesn't totally work for Rondo if you're playing as Maria, though.

On this note, we don't really get games are cutting edge in terms of art style and have awesome, innovative gameplay anymore. Now it's more stuff like Journey.

Some people would say Gravity Rush is the game I'm looking for but I'm not about to spend a lot on a Vita at the moment to find out. From what I played of the demo, it seemed like it might be another style over substance game. I hope I'm wrong.

Gravity Rush is beautiful, and it's got a really cool play mechanic. But there's just not much to do. It's fun for a few hours but there's nothing that compels you to keep playing beyond that.

  9. If we're gonna talk about sick-nasty stylish moves in a 2D action platformer that take skill to use, we better be talking Hard Corps: Uprising.
