It's not just a statement on characters being positive, because obviously all the characters were flawed in the original, but there's a line between "anti-hero" and "completely useless accessory filling space." There is just no depth to anyone here, it's particularly obvious when it comes the female roles (who so far have been needlessly sexualized, incessant naggers, or just plain silent.) I think the only compassionate female characterization so far has been in the last episode with Norma, who actually showed a vague personality.
With that said, the blankness stems to the male roles as well, though it's not as obvious as with the female cast. This article on The Verge covered a lot of my beef with it so far, including Michael Cera's "Incomprehensibly Awful" appearance. Yup, I too have seen the famous photo of Marlon Brando and have also read The Motorcycle Diaries. Clever. yup.
I'm just not getting this. It's the worst of Lynch.
