As an aside, I like the PSN/XBLA "Spelunky" quite a bit less than the original freeware PC version (though it's still a solid game), the 'better' visuals and soundtrack didn't improve the experience for me.
Brother, can you spare a dime?
This is a small game with 92 backers on kickstarter and an $8000 target. If you're willing to sift through all of the similarly unknown indie games out there, you shouldn't have any trouble finding games in other styles. Plenty of gameboy style games, and even games with an Amstrad look as well. There are SNES and Genesis influenced games too, but once you get to that point you're hovering in the same territory as old arcade games and what was basically the standard for 2D handheld games last decade. Less of a need to go out of your way to take influence from the SNES at that point and it's not as easy to notice when someone does. But even then you still have some people who are carefully tampering with their sound samples to recreate SNES style music.
After trying it in MAME- I, Robot still looks good and actually is fun, even though the game probably came out before the NES. Seriously, it looks like Atari sent a PS1 or 32X game from 1994 back in time. While it flopped in the arcade, I think Atari Games' rights holders (Time Warner then) should've dusted it off and brought out PS1 and Saturn ports. It probably would've been uprezzed to 320 x 240 and bumped up to a full 60 FPS.
Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)
I mean don't get me wrong, I totally backed this. I'd just like to see the same effort to authenticity put into mimicing other consoles.
