Thread: Star Wars: Rogue One (2016)

  1. I snoozed of for 20 - 30 seconds a couple times, but I'd had 3.5 hours sleep so that would have happened in anything I was doing that didn't involve physical activity.

Just saw the movie today and it was a mixed bag. I didn't care about the two main characters in the slightest, and whatever the story tried to push in regards to their relationship didn't work due to the actors seeming to have anit-chemistry. It's not that it seemed like they hated each other, but rather that the two would forget each other existed the second one left the other's line of sight. There's supposed to be a closeness at the end that not only do I not buy from them, but also I don't care about either.

The rest of the supporting cast was great, though. I'd have loved to have had more about the monk and his friend/partner, or sarcasti-bot, or brain-addled former Imperial. The slow pace at the start could have used a bit of acceleration, and the middle bogs down, but the final war scene was honestly fantastic. I didn't mind any of the cameos or call-backs, honestly, because this is Star Wars and they're going to be there no matter what, and the way this story ends a few hours before Star Wars begins means the cameos make a certain sense. I did think Vader's voice was a bit off but seeing him tear through the rebels at the end was somehow incredibly satisfying.

Still, overall I liked Episode 7 better. If rebel-girl and morally-troubling agent were better characters I'd probably have a different opinion, but their time on screen detracted from the bits I liked and the people I'd rather have seen get more attention.

It's a spin-off like the Ewoks movies, and from what I've read, it's a big improvement over those.
it's not because it doesn't have creepy wicket eyes

Expectations are a powerful thing. If you aren't a fucking nerd you would assume Star Wars is the Jedi and that's that. It's completely fair for someone to walk in to that theatre with the Star Wars marquee and have that expectation going in. There's almost 5 decades of expectations.

I think it's also fair to point out that Star Wars can be about more than just Jedi (in fact some of the best characters aren't) but that's a re-education.

I liked TFA—and I like this. I think these things are basically booleans for me.

This is where I feel it's at - almost. Not as good as any of the originals, as good as TFA, better than I-III. Still give RotJ the nod because of it wrapping up the first two masterpieces despite having a myriad of its own issues.

  6. 1. Jedi (Yeah, I'm one of those weirdos.)
    2. Empire
3./4. TFA/Rogue One (currently I give the edge to TFA, but it's very close and could change with time.)
    5. ANH
    6. Sith
    7. Clones
    8. Stabbing Myself In the Balls With a Rusty Fork: A Star Wars Story
    9. Phantom Menace

  7. Not sure how much staying power this is gonna have. I don't think I'll ever watch the prequels or this ever again, honestly. Probably will revisit TFA at some point. The LDs of the originals (previously the VHS set) get watched once every year or so.

I have copies on VHS but they are actual ass. I can't believe how bad tv looked. I remember first realizing the difference between widescreen and pan and scan and having my mind blown.

    Ld's are cool.
