Thread: Philosophy (Audio)book Suggestions

  1. Philosophy (Audio)book Suggestions

I like listening to Bertrand Russell's The History of Western Philosophy while driving and exercising. I have TNL to thank for this recommendation (I think it was Diff). It is an amazing, helpful survey and the reading available on Audible is really, really good.

But it's old. It stops about 120 years ago. Is there a survey out there that picks up where HoWP leaves off--at least through the French guys of the 1970's and '80s--that is as approachable and unpedantic as Russell? Something as untextbooky that I can at least kind of follow while doing other stuff, something not just for Dummies but also for Lazies?

  2. I don't think so.

I think the field has kind of turned inward and surveys like Russell's are not looked upon highly in the field. I mean, I know there are books, but Russell's was intentionally targeted towards non-philosophers who wanted to understand philosophy within the scope of the development of western civilization. That's very unique.

Nowadays you get dopey shit like "Philosophy of World of Warcraft" instead.

  3. Darn.

  4. I thought this one was decent, if a bit dry:

It was published in '67, though, so it probably doesn't include recent dudes either (unless there's an updated edition).

if you can get an audio book of the Power of Myth, you may enjoy that.

  6. I think I may have found the next best thing. The "A Very Short Introduction to [philosopher or movement]" Oxford series has been mostly very good if a little inconsistent (different volumes by different writers) and covers newish stuff. A good deal of them are available on audiobook. $10 per five-hour recording is rough, though.

  7. I am adding to this topic as an author named Anthony Gottlieb published two surveys last year.

I have not read them yet, although they got good reviews.
