Yeah, LOL. It's one of the worst releases ever.

Come on, Junior. Even if you find a rot free one isn't it just going to rot on you in a little bit?

    Indiana... let it go.

Not really. At this point, if a disc shows no rot it's likely going to be good indefinitely. If it shows a little rot it's going to get worse over time. Laserdiscs are made of two separate sides slightly thicker than a CD that's glued together. The rot comes when that glue starts to come apart from improper manufacturing. If it hasn't come apart by now, it will probably be good for as long as any of us old guys would care.

By coincidence, one of the movies I just got was Last Crusade

  5. There are runs that are way more susceptible to rot than others, too. The old mid-80s MCA "Laser Videodisc" rainbow covers seem to get "invisible rot" that only shows up when you play the disc, you can't see any evidence on the surface. Most of the first run DiscoVision stuff is toast.

On the other hand, I've got a Criterion Citizen Kane from 1984 that's minty fresh.

    Oh sweetness!

  8. Sent! Plays fine, little bit of sparse snow on side one, didn't hurt the picture. Might be dust/fingerprints, dunno for sure-- didn't clean the disc up before testing. Sound is fantastic.

Groovy, I'll give it a good cleaning with some Novus and give it a try. Thanks!

  10. I keep meaning to pick up some Novus, Amazon gave me some kind of 'add on: must spend $20 on other items' grief last time I went to buy some.

Going through some new pickups lately; it's becoming apparent that Martin Scorsese adored the LD format and made sure to be an active participant in getting his movies and the movies that influenced him big fancy Criterion special editions. Big early adopter of commentary tracks / still galleries / bonus features. Taxi Driver even has a nice isolated score track. Makes a bit more sense now that Bringing Out The Dead was the very last USA release on the format.
