I don't read Donald's statement as thinking Frederick Douglass was alive. But Sean Spicer clearly had never heard the name before and answered like a kid being called on by Teacher when he hadn't read the book.

I am very proud now that we have a museum on the National Mall where people can learn about Reverend King, so many other things, Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is getting recognized more and more, I notice. Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and millions more black Americans who made America what it is today. Big impact.

Maybe it isn't an indication that he thinks Douglass is still alive, but the part about Douglass clearly reads as a person who doesn't understand what they are talking about. That line is like a cold read, almost. A sitcom moment, where the person is like, "Oh, you speak German? [says something in German]" and the other person goes "Haha, yeah, totally! Ich bin ein Berliner!"

Frederick Douglass? Amazing guy. Really did a great job. I hear so many people talking about him.

What was his job?

What wasn't his job? I mean, the stuff with the slaves... just awe inspiring.
