Thread: The Trump Presidency

  1. NOLA is as close as you're gonna get on that, colloquially. Postal abbreviation doesn't mean shit when there's common usage.

    Yes, but I don't live in O-lins.

I can't help it if you are so stuck up your own assholes you can't infer shit via context.

"i know this guy lives in Lousiana, and I had to learn the postal abbreviations in the 5th grade, but I just can't infer this because of my own coastal and 1980s eddy murphy action movie biases. I need all LAs to be los angeles. I refuse to understand something I clearly do understand."

Perhaps you're not familiar with him but yes. This is accurate. It's actually accurate of most of the young folks running around calling people cucks. Give them a few years, they'll get sprinkled with some salt and realize that nothing changes despite how badly they believed in something, and they'll shrivel up like the rest of us.

Doc makes a good point which may not apply to you: There definitely seems to be a LOT of NPR listeners who migrated(?) in from MSNBC and other moderately+ left-leaning news sources.

This is probably the most frustrating part about whatever you want to call the Trump thing - those "silent majority" folks hating on intelligence and whatnot.

I read Josh's comment as both teasing you (which you fell for) and also a tongue-in-cheek criticism of the Duck Dynasty guys, who put off this air of redneckery but are actually of Hollywood pedigree. How's that for context?

I'm not seeing the second part. They aren't of hollywood. That is part of the problem with reality TV - it essentially outsources entertainment from the west coast. The executives still get rich. But it circumvents a lot of people on the ground.

That fluff, opinion, commentator shtick vs investigative reporting is what I'm getting at. I haven't heard Larry Mantle because he's local. But he gets to be more objective because of it. Once a journalist goes National, they have to drop critical thinking for audience daily affirmations because there is so much money involved and you can't chance upsetting millions of listeners world views.

I haven't listened to NPR in a long time (no more driving). But people believe that sources which match their worldview are objective and neutral and it's the other guys who have teh bias.

There are subtle ways to frame stories that I think people become hypersensitive to when reading stuff "on the other side." So it's all perspective. It goes both ways. Liberals always talk about "the dog whistle" for example and that is them tuning into what they hear from the other side.

Yeah but the right is crazy at this point. They think climate change is secret language for taking their jobs away.

  9. I want to be the Richard Dawkins of politics - abortions, climate change, cultural violence, drug prohibition violence, substances and subsidies, these are all issues we ignore the data on because we've been sitting in the pew of political church too long.
