Thread: The Trump Presidency

  1. That's what happens when lobbyists set policy in secret.

NY Times is already taking up the globalist corporatist position. They're forgetting that everybody hated that hunk of shit except for Obama.

A better question is should they?

I'm getting really tired of identity politics being used to swing elections. Abortion, jebus, and monty python in the bathroom one side, microaggressions on the other.

  5. Well luckily for you, Dems aren't backing down from white guilt identity politics anytime soon.

Part of the greatness that people so fondly recall from days past is due, in part, to the effect that unions had on communities. Church isn't enough for a lot of Americans, even though groups like that are very useful. The unions of yore provided a meeting space for workers to get together and talk about things honestly, and without judgment (or, at least, not in the way we think of it). That candor carried into their personal lives and while life may not have been the greatest for them they knew that things would get better because they were carrying around all of this perspective into other peoples' lives as well. They also had a group looking out for them. None of that exists now, which is really a negative reflection on things like social media because you'd think they would slot right into that "meeting space" void. Yet it doesn't. See the, "I can't understand why anyone would vote for Hillary/Trump!!!" bubble.

Those old unions weren't perfect, of course. But the idea of them is still clean, even if they've come to represent bad elements.

EDIT: Found a good link discussing this better than I ever could. http://www.jefffaux.com/?p=470

Labor unions were key to the post-World War II social contract under which the benefits of economic growth were broadly shared. Collective bargaining agreements set industry-wide standards for wages and working conditions, which put pressure on nonunion firms to keep up or face union organizing drives. Politically, unions were the most important force supporting Social Security, Medicare, unemployment compensation, overtime, job safety, progressive taxes and full employment policies that promoted prosperity far beyond their membership.

But as part of the rightward shift in our politics of the last three decades, business unleashed a relentless political and propaganda campaign aimed at destroying collective bargaining in America. Since 1979, the number of union members has dropped by a third. As a share of the labor force, union membership is at its lowest level since 1916.

It is no accident that as union strength declined, the social contract in America was systematically shredded. Yes, globalization and technology have changed the economy. But as labor weakened, both politically and on the job, business interests have been able to wring the benefits from these changes and shift the costs to workers.
    and

Without unions there will be little counterweight to the campaign financing from corporations and rich conservatives, other than the small number of affluent liberals, who are generally more interested in social and cultural, than in economic, issues.

This seems like an extreme case though. This woman is just shitbats crazy.

This union stuff is so fascinating. According to Salon and liberal skewed media the new job freezes are going to kill the unions and do more harm than good. According to the right leaning media the unions are better off and ecstatic. In this case, I think at this point in time the right wing media is more truthful since they have actual union leaders on video being optimistic.

"This woman" is running for the head of the DNC. You know, the actual party. The debate was broadcast on CSPAN. She had Congresspeople sitting next to her. It's mainstream Dem thinking at this point.

Yeah I know—but lets see if this actually gets her appointed.
