Thread: The Biden Presidency

  1. Honestly with the way things are now, a lot of people are having a time keeping their heads afloat. I've been lucky in that regard so I've just been saving money for the most part.

I haven’t been arsed to look up any economic reports, but I noticed the grocery stores are out of random shit for weeks on end - white tortilla chips verses yellow, my favorite brand of hot dog buns, obscure local soda. I don’t think there’s a run on these specific items, I think there’s a problem in the supply chain.

  3. There is. Global supply chains are failing. Ships are chilling off ports in large amounts. There are not enough workers to change this.

Some people don't want to go back to work. Some people aren't going to be force vaxxed to work. Some companies aren't going to pay more than they have.

I've heard local trucking outfits are offering 30k sign on bonus. They can't get enough people.

I am also hearing crickets from this administration about all prices rising fast.

  4. Well, slightly less than crickets...

  5. Haha. This fuckin clownshow.

How about you: use national guard and san diego military to help? Call them up and offer to help? Do something.

    FFS.

  6. Using publicly funded institutions like the military to run the supply chain? That's capitalism. When Kroger is out of Dunkaroos? That's socialism.

Don't conflate the shipping logjam with the labor shortage. Yes, having more stevedores could help, but the crisis is more a result of lopsided importing during covid, a lack of logistics for getting containers to where they need to be after they're used, start-and-stop shipping from Covid-related shut downs and tarriff-relatated antics... It's a whole big clusterfuck that needs more than just some raises for longshoremen (who are pretty well paid and all unionized and probably mostly don't want to lose their jobs).

And beyond the ships sitting in docks, there's the fact that the whole country started ordering all their shit through the mail and not just going to stores and that's fucking up the normal supply chain too.

None of this really has to do with the separate crisis of low wage customer-facing jobs being asked to do double the productivity for not much more pay and telling employers to go fuck themselves. Companies that are short staffed are going to have to give productivity bonuses to the remainers if they they don't want to lose the rest.

  8. There are a multitude of reasons why. Cali has some blame as well with their stupid emissions laws.

I don't care how the truck got in the ditch. I wonder how the man in charge is going to get it out.

Apart from empty platitudes or underlings saying it's the unvaccinated's fault, or it's good or whatever nonsense it is today.

This is just lunch pail mook talk, man, he's a president not a wizard. You can't just deploy the national guard and expect this to go away.

The solutions here are gonna take time. They involve long term investments in infrastructure and automation. Congress is gonna have to actually get their shit together and open the purse strings if we want to speed it up.

If you're actually worried about our collapsing infrastructure, vote every partisan obstructionist who is stopping the funding of infrastructure out next year. That's the best I can tell you.

  10. National guards are deployed in hospitals to help out now. Whatever the solution, and there is one beyond these infrastructure bills, doing nothing about inflation and these supply issues isn't going to work.

This has nothing to do with the bills the Democrats can't pass.

No on expects a wizard. They expect the leader to, i don't know, lead? Joes a man who gets things done, or so he says, this is a large issue.

    What's he doing about it?
