I'm really curious what is an example of the party moving to the center on any issue would be? It seem like anything short of complete concession to what the congressional republicans want is seen as unacceptable and doing nothing would be preferable. Infrastructure seems to be the only issue where this isn't necessarily true.
I just looked up that poll and it looks like it's been asking that question monthly since mid 2017. And every article that is reporting this seems to be showing a chart that starts in January of 2021 when the number of people saying the country was heading in the right direction was at it's all time high (5 out of 10) since the polling started. If you started that chart in July of 2020 then only 2/10 Americans would say the country was heading in the right direction and if you started at the first reporting in June of 2017 it was 3.4 out of 10. Also, the vast majority of people polled considered themselves either Moderate (44%) or Conservative (30%). While 44% of responders say they lean more toward Democrat only 24% consider themselves liberal (and only 10% as very liberal). I also didn't see any mention of the 26% that are "proud to be American", maybe that was a different poll?
