    As some of you may know, although alot of you may not, Dagon is coming out next week on DVD. I've been looking forward to this one for quite a while and unfortunately it never came to a theater near me. First of all for those of you who haven't heard of Dagon, it's a new movie based upon the HP Lovecraft stories Dagon and Shadow over Innsmouth (although mostly based on Shadow, there really isn't much of a story to Dagon ) and made by the makers of Reanimator and From Beyond (two other excellent Lovecraft based movies). As of yet I've only seen one review which you can find here http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/a-m/dagon/. All in all a pretty good review I would say. Personally I'm all about Lovecraft so the arrival of a movie based with in the Cthulu Mythos makes me a very happy man. So which of you other Horror movie fans from this board plan to pick this baby up next week? Did any of you get a chance to see it in the theater?

  2. I watched Dagon about 4 days ago (I get advanced copies of movies). It's a pretty good horror flick as far as horror flicks are concerned, If you were a fan of Reanimator then you'll probably like this. Heck, if you've ever watched a B grade horror film and liked it, you'll prolly like this, other than that, I can't really recomend it.

  4. Getting OT faster and faster...

    In other words it's only for people with good taste in cinema.
    I really like how Yunza did Re-animator and though it could have been better Bride of Re-animator was good also. I haven't seen much of his other movies but I did see some of Dagon. What I saw was pretty good. I'll definately get it if I see it for cheap. Though I've heard some Best Buys have it in stock already. Weird how some stores get movies way in advance of when they're supposed to be released. I got Princess Mononoke like 2 weeks before it's official release from Suncoast I think. And just as a little side note I just had time to watch Haxan tonight (long live Criterion). Man people have to see that movie. Great shit. Most people would probably never want to see it cause it's a silent film but it's great. Man the devil is awesome. I still have to get Begotten (not that it has anything to do with Haxan). Has anyone seen it? It's supposed to be a very disturbing movie/documentary/shit I don't even know what the fuck it is exactly. I remember talking about Haxan and Begotten with someone a long time ago at GG!.

  5. Little note for 2D4EVER,
    As far as when retailers sell new releases:
    All retailers get thier new releases generally a week to 2 weeks in advance (unless theirs a problem with the distibutor, then they might get them later). The retailers are given the release date to adhear by, if they break that date they are subject to a fine or a revoke on their ability to sell such product at all.

    But...usually when you see movies out before they should be, its just some idiot who works there that forgot to check for the release date, that or he did it so either he or some of his friends can buy the movie early

    Also when a retailor sells "pre-streets" their surounding competitors are then able to sell it too, so you'll probably see a few stores selling a certain title early if you find one doing it.

  6. Well, I read alot about this film, Fangoria had few big articles and set visit pieces and it looks great. I loved Reaniamator and From Beyond, and this is another colaboration of Yuzna and Gordon, on the Lovecraft novel. Its been out in Europe for a while, since I seen dvds of it being sold on Ebay, and so were some vhs versions.

    I wonder if US version will be cut to get R, or remains complete?

  7. Being another major Lovecraft nut on the boards, I've been waiting for this for quite some time. Combining Dagon and Shadow over Innsmouth is a brilliant way to go. I loved ReAnimator and From Beyond, but both films had to expand upon the original short story, and while still good, lost a lot of the original Lovecraft mood. Not the case here, it appears!

    I had no idea the DVD was coming out NEXT FREAKIN WEEK!!!!!! w00t!

  8. First of all 2D!!!!!!! WASSUP MY MAN... long time no see. Secondly it's good to see some other people are looking forward to this movie. From what I hear the US release was not cut at all, but that could be wrong... although I hope not. I must say they really need to make some more Lovecraftian based movies. Am I the only one who thinks Call of Cthulu could be made into a great movie?

  9. BBOBB! Nice to see you around. Man...it's been a while. Lots of shit happened but it's alright now (well...as alright as it can be). Once I start making more money I'll order some shit from you. I gotta get into new games again. I don't have a GBA, Gamecube, or X-Box yet. I can get a GBA soon if I wanted to but I don't wanna get a GC or Box yet cause I'm still spending a shitload on PS/PS2/import Saturn games AND DVDS (though I will get Panzer Dragoon Orta when it's released if I have an X-Box or not). And I have hardly any PS imports and no PS2 imports (though that may be due to the fact that my PS2 isn't modded (and isn't going to be) and I don't feel like buying a Japanese PS2 right now). And my list of DVDs to get is getting almost as big as my list of games for ALL systems to get. My DVD addiction kicked back in about six months ago and it's bad.

    Anyway...back on topic. With a semi-good director and a script that isn't written by idiots any Lovecraft movie can be awesome. I do hope more of his stories are made into movies. I can see a Creepshow like movie using several of his short stories doing well. And I'm looking foreward to hearing both commentaries on the DVD of Dagon. Hopefully they'll be as funny as the ones on Re-animator and Bride of Re-animator.

  10. 2D- Good to hear things are going better man... Hopefully the money starts rolling in so ya can catch up again... I know how ya feel though, I've got a list of stuff I need to get still myself.

    Back on topic though, my local Best Buy decided to put Dagon out on the shelves early so I picked it up and just finished watching it. I must say I am truly impressed. It was an excellent horror film... easily the best true horror film in recent times (of which there have been very few unfortunately). The pace was slow, but I don't think it really hurt the film, as it really helped to build up the tension. The only thing I think this movie needed was a bigger budget, as a few of the effects and monsters looked fairly cheesy. The storyline stayed very close to Shadow Over Innsmouth though and that I was very happy about. Easily the best Lovecraft based movie to date. Plus the ending was truly Lovecraftian which made me very glad. I was kind of worried for a bit that they would spoil things with some incredibly happy go lucky ending that you never ever see in a Lovecraft story. Also the short glimpse of Dagon itself was awesome... it merited a rewind and frame by frame for me. I would say they pulled off designing the true definition of eldritch. Now if only they could do Call of Cthulu so I can see what they would make Cthulu look like. All in all an excellent horror flick that every horror movie fan NEEDS to see.

    Oh and as for 2D's note about the Creepshow style Lovecraft movie: You know in my mind that would be an easy way to make a great movie... but it has been done and somehow they suceeded in ruining what would have been an easy great flick. In case you never caught it it was called Necronomicon and it was complete and utter crap. Maybe one of these days someone will get the balls to do it right.
