Thread: Resident Evil DVD

  1. Resident Evil DVD

Picked this up this morning. I won't go into the movie itself (which I think kicks ass) because most of you already either like it/don't like it/hate it. I'll just discuss what the DVD itself has to offer.

The booklet that comes with the DVD is the usual affair, telling of the evolution of RE from game to film. No mention of Romero writing a script is made however.

The Special Features are decent enough for now I guess, since I'm sure they are keeping all of the good stuff for the supposed 2 Disc "REALLY Special Edition". I'm hoping so because as I feared this one is the still cut R-rated version from the theatres. You have 5 featurettes which detail:

-Zombie Makeup Test: Less than a minute of footage of various zombies walking in front of the camera and showing off the makeup fx. Kind of useless really.

-Costumes: This is kinda cool, but really quick as well, just a quick detailing of the various commando costumes, lab suits, and the best part, Milla Jovovich's short dress

-Making of Resident Evil: This is the meatiest of the featurettes, runs about a half hour, usual behind the scenes info, details on how certain camera shots were done. Couple of the actors talk a bit about the backstory and atmosphere of the movie.

-Set Design: Pretty cool little feature, albeit short like all the other featurettes (besides for the Making Of). Just some details on the shot locations, etc.

-Scoring Resident Evil: This ones pretty much an interview with the two composers, Marco Beltrami (of the "Scream" Trilogy and "Mimic") and Marilyn Manson. They, along with the director go a little in depth as to where the ideas for many of the films themes come from (a few coming from Manson's visions of an Evil Alice in Wonderland).

So yeah, featurettes are alright, but let's face it, most people will just watch these once and never touch them again.

Anyways, there's also a music video by Slipknot for "My Plague", it's ok, I'm not really a fan of their music. There are quite a few trailers on here, and I was suprised to see them for Spiderman, XXX, and MIB2. The others include an RE trailer (of course), Final Fantasy Spirits Within and Formula 51. There is also a Cast/Crew commentary, but I haven't checked it out yet. I'm hoping they talk a bit about the sequel. Besides that stuff, there's the usual subtitle option, filmographys etc. I do like the animated menus though, each one with it's own score from the flick(Gotta love the theme played at the Main Menu). So overall, if you like the movie a bit, you might as well save some money and buy the REAL Special Edition said to come out someday. But if you LOVE the movie, or are a horror/zombie movie fan in general, go ahead and pick it up.

  2. damn... if i had known about a 2-disc in the waiting, i would never have bought it today. i hate when they release a dvd now and then come out with another later on that has MORE to it.

  3. I just got done listening to the commentary, have you checked it out yet Ashen? Some of it was interesting, some of it was funny ("Yogurt?"), but damn...I personally think Milla Jovovich is fine as hell, but she was being kind of bitchy in alot of parts of this. However, it was REALLY cool to see that both lead female actors were into the games quite a bit, Michelle especially just seemed like a cool ass chick to hang around with. Her and Milla both knew their shit when it came to RE. RE Zero gets a VERY quick mention but it was cool to know the Director was anticipating it as well. Um..yeah I guess you guys can tell I really like this movie.

  4. haven't watched it yet, but it'll be the first thing i do right when i get off the comp and get ready for bed. a great movie indeed.

  5. I'm gonna set up a rental later, cause I'm waiting for the special edition (which I hope isn't a ways off)
don't wanna tangle with you, I'd rather tangle with him.
I think I'm gonna bash his head in...

  6. Man, I have to wait for it to come out on Region 4. that will probably take half a year or so :P

And the reason Milla Jovovich knows about RE is that she played it with her younger brother. Apparently the reason she joined the cast is that she thaught the game would make a rad movie (which it did )

  7. Well, I'm waiting for SP Edtion too My friend got the regular one yesterday, so I will borrow it from him, once he watches it

Agrees that the movie was kick ass, and fun

"But the zombies are slow and stupid !!!!" - from review of R. Ebert

  8. thats why i rarely buy movies anymore. there will ALWAYS be a better edition down the road. this movie, just like Lord of the Rings will have to wait for my money until later in the year when the collectors editions are out for both.

    *slipknot.....drool*

  9. I really wanted to see this movie in the theaters, but I didn't have a chance to. Now that it's out on video, I'm thinking of actually buying it. If there's a special edition being released, has anyone heard about when it's being released?

  10. I've heard December, but don't know for sure. Expect it sometime near the end of the year though.
