Thread: Favorite Directors?

  1. Favorite Directors?

Mine, in no particular order. I may be forgetting someone, I'll update if I remember.

Paul Anderson (Screw you haters out there)
    Steven Spielberg
    George Lucas
    M. Night Shyamalan
    Peter Jackson
    Kevin Smith

    Hayao Miyazaki (Mononoke Hime)
    Hiroyuki Okiura (Jin-Roh)
Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the shell)
    Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue)
    Shoji Kawamori (Macross Plus)
    Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

and a bunch of other Japanese directors I don't the name of.

  2. There was a post about this several months ago where I listed Wes Anderson, Andrew Niccol, Frank Darabont, Jake Kasdan, and Francois Truffaut.

    But now...
    Krzysztof Kieslowski
    Wes Anderson
    Francois Truffaut

  3. Well, Lets see:

    USA Talent:

    John Carpenter
    Ridley Scott
    Peter Jackson
    Michael Bay
Paul Anderson (Good call Shinobi )

    HK Talent:

    John Woo
    Tsui Hark
    Ringo Lam
    Dante Lam
    Benny Chan
    Yen Woo-Ping
    Corey Yen
    Gordon Chan

    Japan Talent:

    Takeshi Kitano
    Takeshi Miike

And many more that I cant remember at this time

  4. Nice choices Sqoon. Anderson will only get better and he's already pretty damn good. I see you like Truffaut. So you like his movie version of Farenheit 451?

Anyway some of my favorite directors are Miike, Beat, Cronenberg, Gilliam, Lynch, Kurosawa, Scott, Tarkovsky, Raimi (not his more recent stuff but the Evil Dead series and Darkman and The Quick and the Dead and so on), DUFFY (even though he only did one movie it's a great one), Christensen (in all the silent glory), Herzog, Crowe, Stone, O'Fallon (for Suicide Kings) and more.

    Later all...

  5. I actually haven't seen Farenheit 451 yet (though I've seen it plenty of times at the library). Which are your favorite Truffaut movies? I'm still trying to decide between Shoot the Piano Player and The 400 Blows as top choice.

Tarkovsky sounds like an incredible filmmaker. My friend has Stalker on VHS, which I'll end up borrowing some time in the future. Soderbergh is remaking Solaris, though I have my doubts about him and his talents.

  6. I personally like The 400 Blows better but they're both great. And as for the remake of Solaris I have my doubts also. The original was so incredible. Why remake it (I mean it is a great movie but can't hollywood leave classics alone?...I hear they are re-making the japanese horror movie The Ring and even renaming it...fuckers) and why now? I forget where I saw the short trailer stating that it was being remade but I remember I was shocked. All I can say is that I hope everyone has or will see the original Solaris before this remake comes out (it's on dvd and vhs though the DVD is kind of expensive now). I will see the remake but only to see what Soderbergh does to it.

    Later all...

  7. Some yet to be named: Kubrick, Miyazaki, Oshii, Otomo, Suzuki, Fincher, Coppola, SCORSESE you bastards, Mendes (never seen AB, but I loved RTP), Ford, LEAN (again, bastards), Aronofsky, Lee, Jonze, Wilder, the guy who did Amelie (forgot his name), and Ang Lee.
    pwned by Ivan

  8. Outside of Martin Scorsese, I cant really think of my favorite directors... I mean all of you guys just named a lot of people and they are covered pretty much.

Just to try to get my point across... I love Amadeus with all my heart, but I dont think Milos Forman is one of my "favorite directors". Likewise I think CTHD is a miracle of a film but I wasnt too keen on The Ice Storm and so Ang Lee is not one of my faves. Also I think Paul T. Anderson is an amazing filmmaker (who has the balls to pull of Magnolia nowadays?)... but I just cant attach the words "favorite director" to his name? I dunno.

Thank God somebody mentioned Scorsese before I did... I mean, the guy has made arguably the best film of the 1970's (Taxi Driver), 1980's (Raging Bull), and 1990's (Goodfellas). He just gets no respect, for some reason.

But other than that... for me, its all about the film itself, not necessarilly the guy directing it (but I would say that a certain director might tempt me to see a movie more).

  9. Stanley Kubrick, Aranovski, David Fincher, and Paul Anderson are my favourites.

  10. David Fincher, Stanley Kubrick, Adrian Lyne, Guillermo Del Toro, Luc Besson, Ridley Scott, Kathryn Bigelow, Jeanne-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie), Miyazaki, Rintaro, & Alex Proyas.

    Satoshi Kon: 1963-2010
