Thread: PAL dvds

  1. PAL dvds

I've heard that you can't play PAL dvds on non PAL tvs. My question is, how is it that I can play Shenmue 2 on my NTSC tv but not a PAL dvd?

  2. I believe Shenmue 2 has been programmed to automatically detect the video signal and switch to NTSC instead of PAL. PAL dvds only output PAL signal as far as I know.

  3. Well. More high-end dvd players, espicially ones with Pal convertor, can play Pal dvds with perfect quality. Also some other dvd players, like mine Daewoo 5700, can also play Pal, but the conversion, not that good, but still very watchable

Since the dc game is coded to so dc console send the signal to dvd to determine is its Pal, and then sends the right type of output, or someting like that.

  4. Ah. Thanks.

  5. Well. I was hoping I could play PAL DVDs on my Japanese PS2, but I guess that's impossible.

I REALLY wanna get Ringu on DVD, but the version I keep running into is PAL.

  6. Korly, check out Daewoo 5700, dvd player, its only $90, can be modified to be Region Free with couple button presses on remote and it plays Pal dvds and vcds and the rest.

  7. Thanks boss, I'll look into that.

Sweet... now I can start importing Farscape DVDs.

  9. If you're looking for a cheaper route, you have a DVD-ROM on your comp and you don't mind not laying down, then I suggest flashing the firmware of you DVD-ROM to make it region free. It works on most every drive I believe. No PAL/NTSC signal problems with a comp monitor either. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll get some links. I also suggest the Futurama Season 1 set for those looking for a good PAL set. Family Guy Season 1 is available too.

Oh, while on the subject, does anyone know where to get a converter for a PS? I have tons of PAL demo discs but I can't play any of them without a messed up picture.

Oh, and can someone tell me what Ringu is about?

  10. Yes, Thats true. You can use your dvd drive to watch Pal and Region coded dvds, once you upgrade, or modify your drive firmware. Its not bad option, if you have a big(and good monitor ) and sound set up, otherwise watching dvds, on big screen tv is still a better(but as it was pointed more costly) option
