Thread: DVD cases vs. Jewel cases (or what case to you prefer?)

  1. DVD cases are just waaaaaaaaay too big. Bleh. There is nothing wrong with jewel cases. Some of you guys say that they're fragile, but I can't imagine what you're doing to them. I have about 400-500 music CDs and Dreamcast games and I have only maybe broken 2-3 jewel cases ever, and that was probably my own fault anyway. Plus, they're easily and cheaply replaceable so it's no big deal. I vote Jewel Case!

However, I must admit that the NGPC clamshell cases are the coolest thing that has ever been designed to house any kind of media. They're the best!!!

Oh yeh, and music CD Digipaks are neat too. Do you guys in the US ever get them? Most of my Swedish/Euro CDs come in them and they're fantastic.

Uh, if you have to buy an additional item to preserve the item who's sole purpose is to preserve yet another item, then I think that's a very good sign that said item sucks.

When I'm buying an audio cd and am deciding between two, if one doesn't come in a jewel case I'll almost always take it over the other one. That's how much I hate jewel cases.

Only US one I own (and have seen) is the US release of the Tenchi Muyou in Love Original Soundtrack, but even that one's extremely flimsy compared to the not-out-of-the-ordinary Japanese digipak albums I own.

I don't know if I like digipaks over normal jewel cases, though because if their CD-holding mechanism breaks you're totally screwed. But if done well, it makes a great collector's item.

  4. I like DVD cases, because my games seem safer when they are in them. And green Xbox DVD case haters are crazy. I love the fact that they are green, because when there's a pile of gaming crap all over my room, I can instantly identify them.

  5. Digipak!

The Digipaks they're using now are prractically unbreakable. I cannot imagine breaking one - short of running it over with a car or something. They no longer use the old "teeth system" to hold the CDs down, so there are no fragile parts.

  6. I prefer Jewel cases. I have never had the "teeth" that hold the disc break. Maybe you are taking the disc out wrong or the "teeth" were slightly damaged in shipping? Either that or I've just been lucky all these years. In fact, I've never had a jewel case break due to normal wear and tear. I have dropped one before though. I must admit though, I've had many get shattered in shipping(Thanks UPS!), but that's also happened with DVD cases so...

As for why I prefer Jewel cases, the thin paper inserts for DVD cases have a tendency to "warp". At times they look as though someone poured water on them. I assume this is caused by the fact that I live in a humid environment. Either way, it is very annoying.

... which is usually the case for me. All my broken-teeth game/CD cases are a result of something that happened during shipping. And I've got at least 15 or so of them.

Speaking of shipping, when I received my Grandia Xtreme, despite it being a DVD case, the slot that holds the instruction manual was already broken off when I received it. Grrrrrrr.

    I've seen those...they rule.

AOL free trials sometimes come in the mini-DVD cases. Chunk the CD and take off the labels and you have a real nice case, free of charge.

  10. Jewel Cases for me.

Oh yeah, I simply love those old giant PSX cases! Especially the card board ones (Doom, Resident Evil).
