Ive played many a PC game that uses that effect (since they are nvidia chips I assume they use the mipmapping as well) and they don't look like that. I think the Xbox developers may just be overdoing it way too much. Or it could be a limitation of the 640x480 resolution.
It's a tie between the GC and Xbox. PS2 is a far second. The PS2 is much more complicated and you need to do much more to meet the graphic quality available on the GC and Xbox. It can be done but only to a limited degree and only using the best programmers.Originally posted by bbobb

i dont have a receiver so the audio stuff didnt matter to me
i prefer the GC controller for FPS and i prefer a higher frame rate so i picked the GC version and ive been pretty happy with it

IGN did a "Head-To-Head" Feature on this game for the PS2, GC, and XBox and this is what they said:
Controls:
Winner = 3 way tie (simply boils down to user preference)

Graphics:
Winner = XBox (they go into graphic detail over the differences of all three games w/ screenshots to aid in their point). They mentioned that the GC version has a "jumpy 60 fps" while the XBox version is a more solid 30. They touched upon your point about the draw distance of the textures but didn't seem to mind and noted that the Xbox version has a lighting engine (shots illuminate their surroundings as they pass through) and additional effects (like metallic like walls in certain sections).
"This is unbelievable. They couldn't be any further off the mark. The difference between the GCN and XBox is great. Side by side, the XBox version is a pale reflection. "jumpy 60 fps", what a load of crap. On the first two levels, they both have slowdown although the GCN never slows down to the XBox versions level, but after that, the GCN never even comes close to anything resembling slowdown. Occasionally you might see a stutter, which might last about 1/10th of a second, but its obvious that it could handle so much more. No sir, no slowdown at all after the first two levels. As for the lighting, I have no idea what they're talking about. Enemy fire lights up, torches illuminate walls, a rocket down a corridor lights up the walls as it flies by, as you run under a series of lights your weapon and your hand illuminates and dims accordingly, spin around and watch the light spin around your weapon, explosions create light sources, its all there. That was just an outright lie."
Load Times:
Winner = Xbox has the shortest load times with the GC and PS2 coming a far 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Overall:
Winner = Xbox (obviously).

Take that as you will but I think I'll stick to the Xbox version.

Rent em both and see for yourself. Here's a couple of other problems I noticed, on the first level, the pond on the XBox version has no animated texture on its surface, its just a blue blur. The Xbox version looks so muddy compared to the Cube's that it actually looks like its running at a lower resolution. I guess thats a by-product of its texturing inabilities. Furious, is there a name for this effect of losing texture detail? Tell me more about it. And no, Mr Casual, its not the resolution, the GCN displays the textures fine at distances."
