Thread: Playing my Xbox in Dolby Digital

  1. Just so you know, "digital" audio isn't nesesarily better than "analog", since it has to be analog before it hits the amp one way or another. Using an audio cable lets the component (in this case the Xbox) do the digital to analog conversion, and using an optical cable lets the reciever do the digital to analog conversion. It all comes down to what has the better converter, the Xbox or your reciever. In most cases, I'd be willing to bet that your recievers do in fact have the better converter so optical will in fact sound better.

  2. Well, Congrats Melf Soon, I will join you as Digital Sound supporter

I really need to upgrade my sound system, since my receiver and speakers are outdated now. I currently shopping around for a decent set, and later will play around to connect all my systems + my dvd player through it. I will check out some of the suggested system, and see.

  3. I believe NHL 2002 on PS2 supported DTS in game. A few other EA games too I think.

Halo cranked in 5.1 is simply amazing. If a game is out on all three systems the xbox rev usually gets the nod because of the amazing sound(and the graphics are usually better).

  4. Before everyone starts jizzing on their Xbox, lets not forget which system was the first to support surround sound: SNES. King's Arthur's World (a classic real-time strategy game from the developers of Starfox) was the first game to support plain old Dolby Surround Sound. 10 years later, developers are playing catch-up.

If anyone's looking for a great reciever in the $400 range, I would reccomend the Pioneer VSX-D811S. It is definitely set for the future, as it decoded Dolby Digital EX (6.1), DTS ES (also 6.1), as long as Pro Logic II. I've had it for about 3-4 weeks now, and it probably has the most features available in this price range. 7.1 pre-ins, 6.1 pre-outs, binding posts; the whole kit and kaboodle.

As for speakers, I couldn't comment, as my current ones are crap. I hope to upgrade them once the gaming frenzy slows down early next year, if funds permit. First to be added is a sub, then the rest. All I have to say is stay far, far away from Bose, as they're very overpriced and their little cubes suck at low and high range, and the "bass module" drops off at about 50hz.

Super Turrican had surround sound as well, right?

  7. Circuit City has a RCA 6 foot optical cable for $20 on its website. I called them up, and they said they have a Monster optical cable for $45. I asked for the RCA, and the person there said it was mainly for other things and that it would slip in and out easily. Anyone have this RCA cable and have problems with it?
