Thread: sega saturn

  1. Shining the Holy Ark:
One of the best first-person rpgs I've ever played, due to the simple fact that you don't spend the whole game in a fucking dungeon. The areas are varied as hell, and the interface makes everything a breeze. Only thing that sucked is that non-conclusive ending.
    Mystaria:
First gen strategy rpg. If you take that into account and know what to expect, you won't be disappointed. Good music. Pick it up if its cheap.
    I haven't played the other 3. Sorry.

  2. Shining the Holy Ark is an excellent dungeon crawler that gives you plenty to do. If you could only buy one of the five games you mentioned, it probably should be this one.

Mysteria was good in its time. It kept me interested until I finished it, but I probably wouldn't get into it too much today.

Battle Garegga and Souky are both very good, but I give the edge to BG. Don't pay more than $70 for either, unless you are a shmups freak.

You do own Dark Savior and Dragon Force, right?

  3. I suggest Shining the Holy Ark and Mystaria only for fans of their genres and Magic Knight Rayearth only for the mentally impaired.

  4. I'm gonna get yelled at for this, but I feel inclined:

Play Battle Garrega before you buy it, evern if you have to resort to emulation to do it. It's a love it or hate it game, and it runs for alot of money on ebay. I'd hate to see you pay alot for it and get caught on the "hate it" side.

  5. Ok, Lets see:

    1. shining the holy ark - ok rpg, but I think its overrated by some of the people here. Good character designs, but boring dungeons, and somewhat ugly prerendered sprites Many secrets to find, like the fairies and demons to collect and use in attacks, and weapons to make using Mithril you find in the dungeons and towns.

    2. mysteria - Havent played it, but looked blech to me

    3. magic knight rayearth - Again havent played it, but heard its not bad.

    4. battle garegga - decent shmup with some good 2d action goin on. Personally was kinda dissapointed in it, but would recomend to try.

    5. soukygurentai - Great shmup, with some cool and intense action. Definately one of the best shooters on Saturn, or PSX.

And if you looking for rpgs, check out Shining Force 3(all 3 Scenarious) which is way better than Shining Holy Arc, and Dragon Force 1&2.

  6. OT: Michael Richards, check your paypal account. You've got $$$! Also, to keep this on topic, I'd have to say that I really love Soukyugurentai-- much of that love may be due to nostalgia since it was one of my first imports. Battle Garegga. Meh.

  7. Soukyugurentai and Battle Garegga are damn good.

Souky's NALS targeting system is interesting- you can switch between different webs to sweep over enemies. There's some great use of scaling, especially in the outer space boss battle and the desert scene Cigs mentioned. One section where you pound on a few submarines also a good underwater effect to the graphics.

Garegga's music is done by the same composer who has lately done the soundtrack to DoDonPachi Dai-ou-Jou. One nice feature is the ability to unlock characters from Mahou Daisakusen. The option formation select system reminds me of MUSHA.

    Finished in 2021: 8 games (PC: 4, PS4: 2, PS3: 1, X1: 1)

  8. Rayearth was overall merely decent, but there were a few hysterical moments and expressions in the game that I found priceless. And if you don't know the original story already, then it should prove to be pretty entertaining in that aspect as well.

Batte Garegga is decent. It's a good game but the damn near invisible bullets ruin it for me. Hence I never play it, since there are many other shooters more worthy of my time.

  9. Well, Battle Garegga is the best shooter I've ever played. Soukyugurentai is #2. I'd need to invent new superlatives to tell you how highly I think of Battle Garegga, anyways, the game's fantastic. Play it on a vertical monitor, though.

And, if you think the bullets are invisible, then turn on the stupid red bullet option: problem solved. I like the bullets the way they are, because you can instantly tell which direction they're headed in, even when the game is paused (on default, the game's bullets look like small missiles, not red spheres).

A great RPG with 3-D rendered sprites. The music is okay, but for some reason it just fits the atmosphere of the game. I highly recommend this often overlooked RPG. Nothing quite like it, with exception to Shining in The Darkness.

    2. mysteria

A solid Strategy RPG. My only complaint would be that you can't save until you've cleared a battle level and sometimes those can last an hour.
    3. magic knight rayearth

Beautiful 2-D game. Plays alot like secret of Mana, but only the character you're in control of does the fighting. The story is okay, but not that memorable. Still a good purchase.

    4. battle garegga
    and
    5. soukygurentai

it would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance to all of those that reply.

    I have'nt played the other 2 games.
