If by "more" you mean "far less", you're dead on. Hardly anybody's even heard of SC, while MGS was a multi-million seller. SC may well be better, but let's keep things in perspective here.

what will most likely be the game of the year...the kind of title you'd sell your own mother for...Within 5 minutes, The Source knew Splinter Cell would unquestionably be that one game which would re-define the genre for years to come...nothing short of phenomenal...watching him move between ceilings is an event in itself and this mere activity was enough to stimulate awe...The gadgets will make you go ga-ga. You don't even need enemies : just walk around and play with your toys...you'll be happy, guaranteed...It's as good as it gets guys...Finally, the graphics are a-w-e-s-o-m-e...The lighting is phenomenal...you won't believe your eyes at these graphics...Get ready for the stealth experience of a lifetime...
    Which leads us to...

You're one of those people who believes movie ads when they say "The Fast and the Furious is one of the...best...action movies..of...the year", aren't you? There were more than 15 seperate instances of ridiculous superlatives (I didn't get them all) in that "preview" - my favourite being how he knew it was the best game ever after 5 minutes. It may be better than MGS, but could you have quoted a worse source?

When I said people I meant more amoung the hardcore. (those sitting on the web all day downloading movies and anticipating thier next game purchases, and such)
Of course MG's hype was partially generated from the media in the first place, which naturally led it to be hyped from the general masses and of course most people bought the game, loved it, and then just kind of moved on. But SC to me and many others is sounding more promising based on all the cool things it will have and the general work being put behing it. It's got that "I can't wait to get my hands on this" quality to it, whereas another MGS sequel to me doesn't sound as pants wetting for some reason. (maybe because SC is close to release, but that's not the only thing)

The people anticipating the next thing are more hyped over SC (in thier mind) than just another mgs (based on dissapointment on no.2)

    Strider:
I was more excited about SC on it's first announcment. Based on the information, the character, the Tom Clancy backing, (love the Ranbow 6 games), and just the general things I'm hearing about it. The idea of hiding in shadow, the wall cam and other gadgets. Read some other previews (multiplatform sites/mags) and tell me you aren't excited to get your hands on this game? It really does sound like the one stealth action game to beat. There's nothing wrong with being passionate about upcoming releases you really anticipate and a lot of people (maybe not here) I know are really excited to get thier hands on the game. And if it ends up really sucking and not all that, it's those same people who will be the first to bag all the game's faults and spreading the word about it. If thier are people into stealth action gams and they want to know all the feautres in great detail, like how it controls, what you can do, these will help them to decide if they;ll like the game or not. It doesn't matter what words they use to make it seem like it's the greatest game on earth. People aren't THAT shallow. Somewhere in that is the information people want, like the weapons, how good the ai/enemy behaviour is, the main character's background, release date.

There's a difference between giving into hype from someone else's opinion of a game, and just being passionate about a game you already had big anticipation for in the first place.

Good point. Still, a franchise has to start somewhere. Splinter Cell may be such a beginning...

But as you suggested, MGS is pretty close to being legendary, and perhaps not even underservedly so.

I don't think your statement holds any way you slice it. Hardcore gamers don't drive the market. Even so, there are certainly more "hardcore" MGS2 fans (see, e.g. Zidane (personality 4)) than there are "hardcore" SC fans. And casual gamers are going to be drawn towards Metal Gear because of the name and the fact that it will be on their PS2s. Don't forget that MGS2 sold ridiculously well.

No one's saying that MGS3 is going to be better than SC. I'm fairly sure I know which one will sell better, though.

DTR still going to be released on PS2.

  7. That Splinter Cell article made me even *less* interested in playing the game. First off, while I may be quick to judge, there doesn't seem to be anything NEW being done. Those amazing motion detector bombs? Sounds like the trip bombs from Duke Nukem 3D. OMG, night and thermal vision?! Stealth!!??? Running, jumping, climbing, sliding, crouching, and peeking? Insane...

Everything sounds like Metal Gear Solid 2 with nice lighting. There was nothing that was described that blew me away. And, as StriderKyo pointed out, the article just hyped the game so much while giving so few justifications that I will probably just overlook this game.

I'll give this game another chance when I read about it from someone who can give me something worthwhile to be excited about...

Word of mouth is a powerful thing. You can say that sales matter to the masses of people who enjoyed MGS2 and await the next game and want more. But what about those who have moved on and want something more? (not just more of what mgs2 was) Just because something is more well known (by name) now, doesn't mean people won't grow tired of it at some point. MGS2 was good, it took ages to come out, it was hyped in mags like EGM a lot because that's what people/reader's/gamers in general wanted more information about, based on the success of no.1, so it's no surprise to me that it would sell good.

Whether hardcore gamers drive the market, isn't important, but it is more the overall 'critical acclaim' that's important in the long run. Because they (hardcore) buy the most games, play the longest hours, they preorder games first, and anticipate the next releases, they go on boards to seek information about specific things. SC to me and others sounds like a great game (amoung many other great games) worth pimping/recommending/wetting-pants-over because it sounds like something I'd really like. For people who play lots of titles and clones and tired of 'the next sequel', all the little preview details and hands-on impressions that detail things that are gradually added into the game, matter more than how well the game is going to sell or the next sequel to some other well-known franchise. If it further refines the stealth action genre, or offers something fresh or gets something done right, people will praise and appreciate those extra things.

What's important is what I originally intended, not what was interpreted. When I said hardcore, I meant "people around me, (playing many games), tired of the hype of the usual stuff, and ready for the next great game, eagerly await SC more than just another MGS". There you go. Many people around me, are just excited because it sounds like a great game with some cool features, and were dissapointed with MGS2. For fans of stealth action games they would want to try this game out. Not everyone is a mindless follower of brand names and labels. If a game is good enough on its own merits there are bound to be people willing to try it out.

The Source? The POS hip-hop magazine? Fuck, I thought Maxim was bad.

Anyway, SplinterCell doesn't have Solid Snake and that's all that'll matter when it's released. I seriously doubt the TomClancy name will work in its favor.

yet another example of people buying sequels that no longer deserve the hype they generate. *cough...FF...cough*
