Publishing is not expensive money-wise, in my mind. All of the self-publishing routes cede some percentage of the ownership to the company doing the publishing - even the ones who claim you keep your rights. I'm not willing to make that concession. So my life is just query letters and rejections. Oh well!
I find I difficult to believe you can't just get a run of books printed yourself. If I can do it with records, why can't you do it with books?

That's what the kind of capitalism that built this country in the postwar era is. It's the only kind of capitalism that actually works.

If you do, I'll buy a dozen up front. I'll keep one to read and give the rest to a local DIY record store / library. You won't see any money from that, but that's not how capitalism works.

Its more that than you want to admit. Plenty of big companies secretly support regulations as to create an expensive barrier of entry for new companies. Have you ever wondered why you don't see a lot of new car companies?

Econ, as a study, is full of these curve graphs with a high spot right in the middle. For taxes, for infrastructure spending, for minimum wage, for fucking everything, there's too much and too little. The idea that one side or the other is always right is laughable. Solid economic policy is about figuring out which side of the curve we're on and adjusting.

Socialism on the left, libertarian free market on the right, and Capitalism is the sweet spot right in between where social volatility is highest and competition is strongest.
Economics is about the allocation of resources, and all allocations have trade offs. What trade offs we are ok with is mainly a political question.

Regarding the curves you speak of, the high spot is just whatever they decided to put on the Y-axis. And some people value certain things more than others.

I do approve of the whimsical, police academy-esque music though

    Did Hillary get there yet?

  9. So far three different people have recited Catholic prayers during this ceremony. No other faith (or lack thereof) represented. So much for inclusiveness!

  10. Pretty sure the Song of Solomon and Matthew apply to more than just Catholics.
But yeah, where's the Vedas readings?!
