About the Cafe

Welcome to Cafe Tropico, where the Java's hot and the living is easy! Cafe Tropico is the ultimate gathering place for the online community of Tropico, the wonderful tropical dictator game from PopTop Software. This is the place for expert and would-be dictators alike to share and swap ideas and knowledge. So pour yourself a cup of Java, pull up a chair and settle in for a relaxing and informative experience.

Why all this fuss about a single game, you may ask? As an avid player and fan of the game Railroad Tycoon II, also from PopTop Software, I was very confident, even a year before the game's release, that Tropico would be an awesome game that could be played again and again and enhanced by player's input and scenarios. PopTop have proven me right by coming through with a visually rich, strategically deep and just plain fun game to play!

Besides that, making a site like this is a great exercise in learning HTML and how the web works. I've learned a lot in the past little while about JavaScript, cgi and perl scripts and so many other things. Not to mention the many things about geography and history that these games can teach. I view playing games like RRTII and Tropico a great way to stretch the mind to learn new things. I hope you will benefit from this learning and be inspired to learn more for yourself.

When I first set out to create this site, I knew I wanted it to be a place with presence, where an online community could grow and develop, and even feel like they were in the fictional land of Tropico. Based on my RRTII site, the RIP Track, I thought of making it a building or some type of physical structure, but hadn't quite pinned it down to any one type. I also knew I wanted a public forum to keep interest in the site alive and allow the exchange of ideas and questions, like some of the early RRTII forums did.

My inspiration for the cafe concept and the name Cafe Tropico came from hearing some great latin music on the radio by Cesaria Evora from her album, Cafe Atlantico. So, I thought, what better place to meet in the tropics than a cafe, with a coffee bar, news stand and a place to just lounge around and discuss things? I initially thought of calling this site Cafe Atlantico after her album, but I soon found out that there are two restaurants by that name in Miami and Washington DC, besides the album itself. And the domain name was taken already by one of the restaurants. So I decided to check the name "cafetropico.com" and it was available! So I made it mine, and the rest is history!

The Cafe Tropico pledge is to provide a friendly, safe and enjoyable environment for all to enjoy. If you find anything on this site that conflicts with this goal please let me know. I hope you will find this site both educational and fun, and that you will take advantage of the discussion forum and other features to enhance your experience of the game Tropico.

Cafe Tropico is solely owned by myself, CafeDave. Until January of 2002, the site was hosted by Doteasy.com at my own expense. However, I was approached in mid-2001 by Strategy Planet asking if I would like Cafe Tropico to be hosted at Strategy Planet. I was reluctant at the time to give up the freedom of running the show my own way, but rising server costs have driven me to reconsider and become a part of the Strategy Planet family. My hope is that this will allow the site to grow even further and add to the community that already exists.

Thanks for visiting the Cafe!
