The Next Level Feature Interview: Spy Kids stars Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara

We recently caught up with Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, the two child stars of the upcoming Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, the latest of Disney's popular family adventure films. The second Spy Kids sequel has a twist: this time pint-sized spies Carmen and Juni are warped into the sci-fi cyberworld of a video game, where they fight evil toy maker Sylvester Stallone along with the help of their parents, played by Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino. Audiences can further immerse themselves into the Spy Kids experience by wearing 3-D glasses at the movie and by playing the Spy Kids 3 games coming out soon for GameBoy Advance and PC.

Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over warps into theaters on July 25th.

TNL: In your new movie Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, you get warped into a video game. If you had your choice of any videogame in real life, which one would you pick to be sucked into?

Alexa: I'd pick Dead or Alive 3.

Daryl: Dead or Alive 3? Why that one?

Alexa: It's a really fun fighting game for Xbox! There are lots of cool moves... It's really cool!

Daryl: Well for me, if I had to choose one, I'd pick Stuntman. Because I do all my own stunts in the movies!

TNL: Speaking of stunts, was that really you playing guitar in Spy Kids 2's "Isle of Dreams" music video during the end credits, Daryl?

Daryl: No, that was just me doing my effects air-guitar! And my favorite part of the video was jumping into the crowd and crowd-surfing. It was awesome!

TNL: Well, on the other hand, we know that was really Alexa dancing and singing in the video! Those were some nice moves... ever think of putting out a rhythm dance game like Britney Spears' Dance Beat?

Alexa: Yeah, that would be fun... but you're not really dancing in that game, you know, you're just hitting buttons. I'd like to do a game where you actually get to come up with your own dance moves.

TNL: How about something more like Dance Dance Revolution?

Alexa: That's a nice game, but even in that you're still not really doing your own dancing. You're just hitting buttons with your feet to the music.

TNL: Did Britney Spears give you a call after seeing your moves in that video and ask for some dance lessons?

Alexa: [laughs] No... I know Britney's sister though, but I haven't met Britney.

TNL: Did you play any videogames during the making of Spy Kids 3?

Daryl: Yes! [Director] Robert Rodriguez is a huge videogame fan. We all played videogames in his trailer like every day...

TNL: Will you be working with Robert Rodriguez again? Any plans for another Spy Kids sequel after this one?

Daryl: This is the last Spy Kids that's planned for now, but who knows? We might make another one later.

TNL: Can we look forward to seeing you guys in any other movies besides the Spy Kids series? Alexa, any plans for a music album? [both laugh]

Alexa: I don't know... We have other movies coming up, but we can't really say right now.

Daryl: You never know what to expect!
