Rumors of a direct sequel to Final Fantasy X have been circulating for quite some time. Several months ago, Squaresoft leaked information about a possible sequel that would take place years after the ambiguous ending of FFX. This news excited some fans, while others were absolutely appalled at the idea. After all, a direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game had never been seen before. Regardless, Squaresoft put a preview of the FFX sequel in with its newly released Final Fantasy X: International (despite the name, it's only available in Japan). More information trickled out soon after, which led fans to believe that two sequels would be made - a "Yuna" version and a "Rikku" version. It was assumed that each game would star each respective FFX female character in her own adventure. This idea was later scrapped, and it was decided that only one sequel would be made.

FFX-2 seems to be quite different from its predecessor in many ways. Take, for example, the look of the main characters. Yuna has now abandoned her practical summoner's outfit for a low-cut shirt with the blitzball emblem of Tidus and Jecht in the center, and pair of shorts that expose her… assets. Rikku appears to be wearing a yellow bikini top and a whole lot of feathers. The third main character, which most people suspect to be Lulu, has not yet been seen in a old-screenshot, but it is apparent from the promotional poster that she wields a rather large sword.

The gameplay also promises to be considerably different from that of FFX. The sequel seems to be closer to an action RPG rather than a traditional one. old-screenshots have shown Yuna running, jumping, and climbing. The Sphere Grid is gone, yet it is unknown what will be replacing the innovative system. Several battle events found in FFX, such as Overdrive and Overkill, will not be present. The only hint that Squaresoft will reveal about the new battle system is that it will be more realistic.

Despite all of these differences, FFX-2 will not be completely unfamiliar to those who have played the original game. Several locations, such as Kilika, the Mi'ihen Highroad, and Macalania Woods, will all be important areas to explore. Many of the enemies and townspeople from FFX will also be returning in the sequel.

FFX-2 will begin with Yuna traveling in search of adventure with her friends. A new force of evil, however, decides to mess things up and threaten the Eternal Calm that was brought about at the end of FFX. Of course, this will no doubt lead Yuna and crew on an exciting new adventure in the world of Spira.

Though very little is known of this title, RPG fans seem to be paying close attention to each tidbit of information as it slowly leaks out. Many hardcode Final Fantasy fans say that the whole idea is blasphemy, while others are genuinely looking forward to seeing FFX's heroine in hot-pants. Even Squaresoft seems to be getting excited about the idea of creating direct FF sequels. Several websites have rumoured that the people at Square are considering a direct sequel to the well-received Final Fantasy 7. Could Squaresoft be on the verge of making another financially dangerous mistake (read: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within), or acheive huge success? Only time will tell.
