As developers become more attuned with the PS2, unlocking doors which allow them to deliver new experiences for players, Universal Studios has prepared a strong lineup of titles certain to pique the interests of casual and hardcore types alike. Following in the recent release of the action-packed sequel The Mummy Returns, Blitz Games has given close attention to steer away from the lackluster movie-to-game adaptions, thus being able to deliver a game which showcases a captivating storyline, amazing visuals, and an unforgetable adventure.
The Story:
The story line of The Mummy Returns for the game follows the plot of its theatrical counterpart. The Mummy Returns is set in 1933, nearly a decade after the events of the first film. Rick O'Connell (Fraser) is now married to Evelyn (Weisz), and the couple has settled in London, where they are raising their eight-year-old son Alex (played by screen newcomer Freddie Boath). When a chain of events finds the corpse of Imhotep (Vosloo) resurrected in the British Museum, the mummy Imhotep walks the earth once more, determined to fulfill his quest for immortality. But another force has also been set loose in the world -one born of the darkest rituals of ancient Egyptian mysticism, and even more powerful than Imhotep. When these two forces clash, the fate of the world will hang in the balance, sending the O'Connells on a desperate race to save the world from unspeakable evil, and rescue their son before it is too late.
The Game:
In the same fashion as the handheld edition released in May, the PlayStation edition will thrust players into two significant roles, allowing them to play as the hero or villain. Once players choose their path, they take control of either Rick O'Connell or Imhotep. When a player picks Rick's path, his goal is to rescue Alex, resuscitate Evy, defeat The Scorpion King and eventually save the world. His enemies include Imhotep, his living and undead allies, pygmy mummies and The Scorpion King.
As expressed by Jason Wilson, president of Universal Interactive Studios, The Mummy Returns features "ultra-realistic graphics and multiple-action camera angles (which) create a dynamic view of the characters and locations, enhancing the player's experience." Each level delivers intense action including the Hamunaptra Ruins, London and Cairo, where your gameplay abilities will be tested to the fullest.
Personally, as a fan of the original film and sequel, the game adaption looks very promising. Unfortunately, I am unable to express the gameplay elements since it was unplayable at E3 Expo 2001. However, be on the lookout for continued updates and a full hands-on review when the game is released later this year.
