I'll tell you the truth right now; I wasn't really looking forward to reviewing or previewing this game
at all. Why? Mainly because I didn't know what to expect from it. I mean, a horse racing game in
kind of the same vein as Gran Turismo? Too left field for my liking. But man, so far I've been
pleasantly surprised by what Gallop Racer has to offer.
From the get go, you can choose to start a new season, with you choosing what your jockey will be wearing
in terms of color of your jockey suit, as well as his (or her) name. You start off with your horse, and participate in many races as the year goes by. As you start winning more races, you earn more money to buy better, faster horses for
the increasingly harder races.
As far as the graphics go, the engine is pretty solid, as it can handle the entire field of horses
on an entire screen at once (a dozen or so), which is pretty incredible considering that most racing games can't handle more than 6 at a time.
The control is nice, as it the actual gameplay of racing the horse. While I thought it wouldn't take
that much strategy to actually win a race, I have yet to win one; this game takes a lot of patience and a lot
of strategy. Basically your horse will start to die down near the end of the race, depending on how fast it had
been going for the rest of the race. Push your horse too hard, and it'll slow to a near stop only meters away
from the finish line, push it too light and you'll wind up being at the end of the pack for the entire race.
There's a fine line between too much and too little in this game, and it's imperative that it is found
before you expect to win any races.
The other thing I noticed was the music, it's awesome. It reminds me of Ridge Racer Type 4, with it's
fast beats with mellow melodies, it's definitely different for this type of game. But then again, this is a
really different game. (Ed's Note: Reno is a "different" editor, hehe!)
